Outlets in New York: Woodbury or Jersey Gardens?

Anyone who comes to New York – or to the United States in general – always ends up enjoying the trip to do some shopping. Among those who want to do that, there are those who want to visit the outlets. Although they are quite popular in Florida, New York also has options: Jersey Gardens, which is in the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey, and Woodbury Commons, in Woodbury, NY. And then, there is the question:  which outlet to choose?

And the answer is: it depends! In fact, even the simple fact of going to an outlet depends on your profile. For example, I think New York has a great number of discount stores and if you are not looking for very specific things, these stores will be good for your needs – check the guide at the end of the post.

But back to the question about the two outlets, this subject is very recurrent. There are people who prefer Jersey Gardens, some other people prefer Woodbury. How to decide which one is best for you? Today’s post can help you decide. I also would like to thank André Luiz Rossi, a reader who posted these information on the Facebook group and allowed me to use the information for today’s post.

Stores: Woodbury has 237 stores and Jersey Gardens has 203 stores.

Distance and transportation:

Woodbury: 49 miles by car from Times Square (approximately 1h11min, depends on traffic). By bus, the ticket costs from $35 to $42 (round trip), leaving from Port Authority Bus Terminal (42th street & Eighth Avenue) and the trip takes approximately 1h15min. You can buy the ticket with the company Coach Usa and I also recommend to check out Groupon, because once in a while there are deals.

Jersey Gardens: 17 miles by car from Times Square (approximately 43min, depending on traffic). By bus, the ticket costs $14 (round trip), leaving from Porth Authority Bus Terminal and the trip takes approximately 31 minutes. You can buy the ticket at the NJ Transit terminals at the Porth Authority Bus Terminal. (bus 115)

Structure:

Woodbury is open, rain or shine, summer or winter. Jersey Gardens is a closed-mall with heating and air conditioning, which in the winter of New York makes all the difference because you do not have to be taking off and putting on your coat every time you enter or leave a store.

Taxes:

The price of a product on the shelf is not the amount you will pay when going to checkout because the taxes only appear at the time of purchase. The percentage varies according to each state and city. At Jersey Gardens, taxes are 3.5% – and there is no charge for clothing. At Woodbury, the tax charged is 8,125% for all items – except clothes and shoes under $110, which have a 4% tax.

Now, a very important information that few people know: there is no sales tax on an item of clothing or footwear that costs less than $110. An item of clothing or footwear that costs $110 or more is subject to the full 8.875% tax rate. Sales tax is calculated per item, so even if you buy two or more items that add up to $110 or more, you only pay tax on the items that individually cost $110 or more. Check ou more information.
