Liberty Park: a new elevated park in New York

I confess: I am not a biggest fan of High Line Park. The idea is pretty cool, the architectural design is interesting. It worths a walk and such, but, in my opinion, is not something extraordinary, you know? But, matter of opinion. Some people love the place and think it is something that you definitely have to do it. Well, that’s why I was not very excited about Liberty Park opening, two weeks ago. No, it was not built on top of an old subway line, but the idea is the same: an elevated park. Located next to the One Wolrd Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial, Liberty Park further enhances the Financial District area, which has shown constant news. As we can not talk without knowing, I went check out the park one day after the inauguration to check closely and write a post to you.

It is not a very large park – it takes about five minutes to walk through the whole place. The area holds up to 750 people and has 19 planters with trees, flowers and other plants. The vertical park cost about 50 million dollars and has not been fully completed, as a Greek Orthodox shrine will eventually be opened inside the park, meant to replace St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. When completed, the sanctuary will enhance the beauty of the place with its architecture. The park also features a symbol of American patriotism: a sculpture of a soldier in bronze. Entitled “America’s Response Monument,” it’s a 13-feet-high commemoration of the earliest days of the Afghanistan war that contains steel pulled from the Twin Towers’ wreckage. It stands out as oddly classicist in a park whose ivory white benches look like they were repurposed from space stations.

In addition to the views of One World Trade Center and the 9/11 memorial, Liberty Park has a high access to the Brookfield Place, right there close. The structure of the park has several places to sit and I thought the place very quiet, good to rest and take a break in this crazy New York. As One World Trade Center area is in the itinerary of  everyone who travels to New York City, of course it worths just pass through the park, which is located between Greenwich Street and Trinity Place.
