With feminism getting stronger, it is natural that brands founded by women and brands with feminist values gain prominence and also the preference of the public who believes in this cause. Bulletin is a great example. It is a female-focused startup company meshing philanthropy with traditional retail. Created as a direct response to the current political climate, Broads supports female-run businesses by showcasing 40 completely female-driven brands and featuring products made for women, by women. Ranging from graphic tees to feminist zines, every product carries a message of empowerment and celebrates individuality.
Bulletin began as an experiment. The main idea was to reinvent the way stores work, and make it easier for brands to access physical retail space. With the internet, anyone can open an online store in just a few clicks. How could we bring this ease and efficiency to traditional retail? That’s how Bulletin was built: to be a platform that allows brands to share the cost of a real-life store. The team scours the internet to dig up the very best brands and gets their products on the shelf in just a few days. The project is doing great: Bulletin already has two locations in New York – one in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan. I was there to check it out and show you a little bit.
Bulletin’s main goal is great: they want to send a message and do something positive for women, rather than just run a store for sales-on-sales. Products are sourced from hundreds upon hundreds of incredible female-founded e-commerce brands that struggle to get access to physical retail space. Small brands and the local boutique shops that support women are being pushed out of strong retail neighborhoods. Many of those brands are making products explicitly for and about women and share a very feminist mission. Besides that, in collaboration with Planned Parenthood of New York City, Bulletin is donating 10% of all store sales to PPNYC.
The curation of products is incredible and super diverse. From shirts that always have something to say to pins, from earrings to chains, from cards to calendars, from decorative objects to keychains: everything in the Bulletin is super empowering. And I don’t know about you, but I enjoy buying at a store that supports small brands, which have a noble cause and whose sales is still donated for an institution. Long live initiatives like these!
